Up, up and away

The only photos I took this weekend were these, and I have been hesitant to take them off the SD card to post only because it was such a sad ending to our time at the park.

[#firstworldproblems]

We've been waiting for a wind free moment of opportunity to take the freshly built RC plane for it's virgin flight. In between the rain on Sunday afternoon there was a break in the weather and a relatively calm and sunny spot. So we seized the moment and went to the park to fly the craft.

Both Kien and Jef were rather excited, a) to get out of the house, and b) to fly the plane that has been hanging in the bedroom for over a week.

The plane flew really well.

See that giant tree in the background? The plane spent a night in the top branches. A few people at the park, including ourselves, spent ages yesterday trying to get the plane down, to no avail. It was stuck - well and truly stuck - and I was so sad at the prospect of $300 worth of plane and radio gear stuck in a tree that I couldn't bring myself to take a photo of the sad sight. What's more, I was close to ditching all the above photos too.

But hark, good news. After weathering the storm and shifting position during the day Jef was able to lasso the branch it moved to, and the plane came down with a bit of shaking. Woohoo, recovered plane, which means woohoo, Kien no longer has to keep saying "Daddy's plane is stuck in a tree" over and over again. You know how painful that is when it's still stuck?

The boys spent a bit of the evening fixing the broken bits, which were actually few and far between.

So a happy ending after all.

PJs all day

Although the title of this post may sound like I've been a lazy mummy who can't get her a into g to dress her child, I swear this is not the case - although I must admit it was really nice not having to dress him this morning (change of nappy being the exception). He slept through the night last night too, so we started off on the right note this morning. I'm still not 100% well, and now just happen to have lost my voice as well, so I'm squeaking my way through this week.

We had a pyjamas and pancakes day at playgroup this morning.

I helped make the pancakes, but Kien was constantly asking me to go outside to play with him. He was very patient when I told him I had to do this and I'd come out after everyone had eaten.

He ate one bite of a pancake, had a few slices of banana, and was tucking into the rest of the fruit on his plate when someone plonked a container of blueberries on the table. With his favourite food on the table there was no way he was eating anything else. I think he may have consumed half that container of blueberries.

Finally I went outside and played with him.

Here's a little montage of him outside this morning. He's a real chatterbox, as you'll see, and he's also getting to an age where he is actually playing and interacting with other kids.

It rained on and off all day so I decided to stay home for the rest of the day.

My neighbour Diane gave me some fish that came all the way from Kiribati - her daughter's boyfriend is from there and the fish (a whole chilly bin full) were a gift from him.

I baked them for dinner tonight (with Kien's help peeling the garlic).

I'm bracing myself for another hard day in the office tomorrow. It's going to continue being this busy until we deliver this project at the end of October. I just need to make sure I'm pacing myself and not take the whole thing too seriously otherwise I'll drive myself mad as a result of my over zealous perfectionist tendencies.

I've had a lovely camomile tea, and I'm off to bed now. Goodnight.

Snippets

Wow wee - time flies when you are having fun - or busy. Either and both statements are true, I reckon, and sums up my last couple of weeks. Here are the highlights.

Fishing

Last Saturday we tried our hand at fishing again, this time off Queens Wharf.

It was a windy and cold day, but that did not deter us.

We were patient; we dropped our lines and waited.

Kien was too impatient to wait for any sashimi we intended to serve up as a result of our catch, so he stuffed his face with grapes instead.

Alas, no fish were caught. It was a fun way to spend a few hours anyway.

Fathers Day

Belguim Beer Cafe for lunch.

Brief jaunt to Wellington

I hopped on a plane after work on Thursday and one hour later I was in lovely Wellington. Spent the evening with my friend Justine, who was over from Brisbane for a conference. We went to Lone Star for dinner seeing as it was only two doors down from our hotel. Considering I hadn't hardly eaten anything substantial for 3 days due to being sick with flu-like symptoms I felt famished. Luckily for me the restaurant meals served here were generous.

It was so lovely to wake up in the morning and read in bed for 3 hours. Talk about indulgence.

I like Wellington a lot. It kind of reminds me of San Francisco in some ways.

I then did a little bit of wandering around and shopping since it was nice and quiet.

This graffitied building is on the Cuba Street shopping strip, and I found the contrast to be really beautiful (grand and industrial and old and ugly sort of beautiful if that makes any sense at all).

I think Kien would love watching this structure - water filling buckets that would tip over and cascade to other buckets that would tip over.

At midday I headed back to the airport, and I was waving goodbye to Wellington from the sky.

No sooner had I finished my cup of tea I was saying hello to Auckland again.

I took Kien to a kids dinner that afternoon/evening hosted by one of the girls from my coffee group. Unlike me I did not take a single photo of the evening. It was fun though, I can vouch for that.

Pirates party

On Saturday I took Kien to one of his Playgroup pal's fourth birthday party. My creativity level at the moment is next to none, so Kien was a pirate on the inside (if he knew what a pirate was).

Scooter

He's been asking for a scooter for quite some time, and we've been promising him one ever since we came back from the Cook Islands. Today was the first time he's been outside with his scooter. We were heading to the park so Jef could fly his RC plane that he's just finished putting together.

Unfortunately it was too windy to fly. But Kien got a chance to wear his helmet for real.

Quick hello to family

A brief visit this afternoon to see my folks.

And that's a wrap.

Wrapping up the week

I've been finding it difficult to sit down and get a post out these last couple of weeks. A project I'm currently on at work is consuming all of my creative capacity, and by the time I pick up Kien, play at the playground with him, get home, feed him, bath him, read stories, put him to bed, battle with him to stay in bed - well by now it's 20:30 or there abouts and I'm pretty much expended. Last night I couldn't be bothered with the repetitive to-ing and fro-ing so I crawled into bed with Kien and fell asleep. I woke up around 23:00 and found the TV streaming some sports game from the internet, and I couldn't find the keyboard or mouse to stop it playing. Jef was asleep, and I nudged him and said I couldn't turn the streaming off. He turned over and said "just turn it off" and went back to sleep. I went out and yanked the power cable from the socket. I turned it off, alright!

A weeknight dash

On the weather front this week has felt like Spring is here even though it's still a tad cold. On Monday we decided to go to the beach after work.

I got home, quickly prepared a dinner fitting into a canister, got Kien from daycare, and five minutes later we were making sand castles.

Dinner on the go works well for us. Kien definitely eats more when he's distracted.

We played until the sunlight was traded with bridge lights.

Son and mum Tuesday

He was happy and (as a result) independent, and that makes our day enjoyable and fun.

We had a good time at playgroup. He loved being outside playing in the garden and riding on the bikes.

Here's a video of him enjoying his time outside.

It is great when he fills himself up at morning tea with lovely fresh fruit.

And he was hungry again an hour later at story time.

I love it when he wants to eat!

Playground boldness

The last time we came to the Tole Street playground Kien was too small to enjoy the structures here. But now he loves it.

I can't believe how bold he has become. He climbs ladders and crosses bridges without needing my help, although I must admit I am hovering close and prepared to catch if he falls. BTW, he climbed that red spiral thing you see in the background - of course I didn't take a picture! I was underneath with my arms outstretched.
