Journey to the Blue Mountains

We flew on the new Air New Zealand Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Sydney on Saturday for an extended weekend getaway. It was such a comfortable flight, and Kien was really taken with the state of the art inflight entertainment. No matter how often I fly I just love being up above the clouds.

He watched some of his favourite cartoons, and then decided he wanted to follow along with the flight path.

I booked us a suite at the Novotel with fabulous views over Darling Harbour. That night we were very fortunate to witness the fireworks from our window.

I must get myself a lightweight travel tripod instead of trying to balance my camera on footstools in an attempt to do some long exposure shots. In the end the only semi non blurry photo I got was this one, and it doesn't do the view much justice.

On Sunday we headed out to the Blue Mountains in our little green rental car. It was rather crowded at Echo Point - much to be expected really. This popular destination definitely delivered spectacular panoramic views.

The Three Sisters sandstone rock formation - awesome sight.

We took the track down the cliff into the Jamison Valley. Beautiful trees lined the path that took us to the stairs.

Kien was extremely adventurous. We left Jef behind at the lookout point, and Kien wanted to go all the way down the Giant Stairway to see where it would lead us. I kept on reminding him that we also had to come back up, and I knew that more than likely he would not have the energy to climb the steep path up again.

We didn't get to the bottom; I wasn't sure where the bottom actually was or what was down there. So we got to this point before turning around and headed back up again.

Of course I had to carry him!

I certainly worked off everything I ate and drank that morning!

Translating questions that may not need answers

Isn't it interesting that when faced with what appears to be 'tough times' you propel yourself down a path where you are actually trying to translate questions you hold rather than answering them. Yeah, it's been a bit quiet on the blogging front lately because I've been concentrating on a few different facets of my life, and I've simply depleted my energy reserves. It's hard trying to juggle work, family, exercise, couple time, alone time, social time, being sociable, general interest/hobbies, mindful parenting, and sleep. What's more all that takes precedence over the other stuff you do in order to keep your life in order! Plus, it doesn't help that I've been slightly obsessed with Ingress (although a very pleasant distraction) since last Sunday.

If you haven't heard of Ingress here's a sentence straight from wikipedia describing what it is: "The gameplay consists of establishing "portals" at places of public art, landmarks, cenotaphs, etc., and linking them to create virtual triangular fields over geographic areas." Essentially if you've ever played "capture the flag" in real life, and enjoy finding interesting art work, plagues or places of interest in the area (that you may not have known even existed) then you'd understand why the game is compelling. It makes you want to get out and about and walk around looking for these things using your GPS enabled smartphone. It's also strategic and tactical depending on how you want to play the game. You are building these virtual triangles between different locations, but at the same time there are real people out there who are doing the same thing, but on the opposite team. So you try and outsmart each other by anticipating what they will do and then block them, or try and take back the place they captured. There are hundreds of people playing this in Auckland, and multiple thousands of players around the world - and you don't even know who they are except by their online name. I know it sounds weird. I read what I've just typed and it sounds in some ways like "The Matrix" movie.

Anyway, enough nonsense talk.

Besides everything else that's going on we've also kinda sorta shifted house - maybe 80ish percent done. All that needs to happen now is to sort out what we keep and what we throw out/give away from the stuff we still have at the apartment, and then we get contractors in to finish up with the renovations. I need to motivate myself to do said tasks...which is easier said then done. But I will try hard this week (and/or next week).

It is nice that I can send Kien outside to play without having to be out there myself.

School holidays are over - the only impact with school break is that Kien's swimming lessons cease until the new term starts again, which was this last week just been. So back at swimming lessons last Tuesday.

Start of Term 3 swim lessons from Lien on Vimeo.

It's amazing how fast these kids learn. As you can see in the video he can get from A to B by himself now. The pool depth there is above his head, so it's pretty cool he has the confidence to swim to the platform on his own.

The other day/week I took Kien to one of our favourite haunts, the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Ok, that's all I've got. I've got a tonne of things in my head I want to type, but Dreamland is beckoning, and that place is way too enticing to ignore.

The day I jumped off a bridge

Kawarau Bridge - plummeting 43 meters down to the river. It was an amazing experience.

The only time that I got really freaked out was when I was shuffling towards the edge and I looked out, over and down. My heart was thumping as I realised I was actually going to free fall all the way down. The guy who was there on the platform with me asked if I was scared. "Oh yeah, now I am!" was my response, to which he replied, "Good!". Next few seconds were spent smiling and waving at cameras, and then everything happened so quickly after that.

I was giving Thumbs Up to Jef and Kien. I wasn't even sure I was looking in the right direction.

And here's a video of my Kawarau bungy jump taken by Jef. They wanted us to shell out $45 to purchase their CD/DVD - that's a tad bit steep, don't you think?

I did that. Finally.

The Remarkables and Glenorchy

On Sunday morning we went to town to purchase snow mittens so Kien's fingers didn't freeze off in the snow. While we were at the store they were selling these cheapo plastic sit on sled things so we got that as well. We asked the dude in the store if he could recommend anywhere with enough snow for us to play in. He suggested The Remarkables - the ski field hasn't yet opened since there hasn't been enough snow fall, but it would be perfect for what we wanted to do.

There was definitely enough snow for playing in! Beautiful, powdery fresh snow that crunched under our feet with each deep step. I've never experienced this much snow before, because I haven't experienced much snow at all. This sand loving summer girl doesn't like being cold and ladened in layers to keep warm! But I've come to appreciate how wonderful it is to be somewhere you can be cold and sunburnt at the same time.

When there is snow what else are you going to do if not build a snowman with the white stuff.

And what else are you going to do if not eat the white stuff.

"Snow is so yummy!"

Frosty the Snowman, himself.

It's so weird to imagine that in one month's time (if not sooner) this place will be full of people and these lifts will be completely occupied. Right now it looks like a ghost town, save for some staff and a handful of other tourists who took the steep route up here.

As we drove back down the hill I made Jef stop so I could get out and take some photos of the scenery.

Since there was no one there to take a picture of me with the lovely backdrop I took a selfie.

Next stop - Glenorchy. It was like we were in a quiet alpine village somewhere far, far away.

A brief drive back to Queenstown as the sun was setting meant more stopping for photographs.

This is what it looks like from Jef's point of view while traveling with me.

But this is my point of view.
